Origin of Halloween Costumes

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 8:33 am

Remember when were kids that we had a great time donning those Halloween costumes we made or our parents have bought or rented for us? We gang up with the rest of the neighborhood kids and go around screaming ?trick-or-treat!? like there’s no tomorrow, leaving our voices hoarse the next day. Well, we basically have experienced it, we let our kids practice it, but do we really know the origin of putting on Halloween costumes in the first place. Some of us may already know but for the benefit of those who don’t, here’s the story.

The origin of the celebration can be traced back to ancient Celtics. The have this feast called Samhain which is a festival held during the end of the harvest season and which is also the Celtic New Year.

According to Celts beliefs, during this time of the year, the spirits of the dead will go up to the surface world and try to posses living bodies for the year to come. To prevent there bodies from being possessed, Celts would light bonfires and dress up in all sorts of morbid costumes just to discourage the spirits of the dead from entering their bodies.

However, the practice of placing costumes in America can be traced to only as recent as the 1900s. It was only in the 1930s that Halloween costumes began to be mass produced. The usual costumes that people rent or make are those of different monsters including but not limited to vampires, ghosts, ghouls, demons, witches, and skeletons.

Even if it is the night that evil is supposed to surface, ?good? costumes are also a common choice among children and adults alike. In fact, princess, fairy and angel costumes often times make it to the top ten list of top Halloween costumes.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and Halloween experts is time.

If you’ll invest a little more time in reading, you’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to Halloween.

Also popular are pop culture costumes which mimicked famous personalities, fictional characters, celebrities, and even politicians have an equal share in exposures during Halloween. Women, no thanks to commercial advertising, have also found this a good time to wear sexy outfits to show off their bodies and sexual prowess. But that is another story.

Other costumes that seem to have a following are clowns, nurses, cats, and that lowly Halloween symbol, the pumpkin. Superhero characters are also fast becoming popular costumes no thanks to the comics to movie fever that have hit the silver screen in recent years. The demand for new and modern costumes have put costume makers busy and costume rentals fully booked.

The fact that costumes for Halloween celebration have become so varied that the modern tradition have overshadowed the earlier tradition which makes wearing costumes during Halloween different from other dressing up feasts there is. And that is the concept of dressing up during Halloween is to mimic the supernatural, the ghoulish being, or basically the scary stuff.

Nevertheless, who are we to keep traditions from adapting to the modern times? Things will always evolve, that’s just how things naturally work. We can’t simply insist on wearing only scary stuff during Halloween. Creativity will play a role in this aspect and people will always crave for new things.

So not withstanding the darker origins of wearing Halloween costumes, we and our children and their children will continue to celebrate this day for as long as there are candies to share and creativity to spare.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about Halloween.

Working on a Budget: Halloween Costumes

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 7:34 am

Halloween is just a few weeks away, and then after that it will be Christmas but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s tackle everything one at a time. Halloween itself will require a whole lot of your time especially if you’re a parent. Expect to be handling the costume designs and worries of your kids for their school play and party or for their trick-or-treating on the 31st. And with all those things in mind, you will always have to shoulder the burden of costs. How to come up with Halloween costumes while working on a budget.

It is true that your life would be easier if you say buy a Halloween costume from online the store or rent one from a costume shop. But if you have four kids and all of them wants a costume that can be quite a burden for your wallet.

Also, if you’re going to rent or buy one, you will have to tackle the stress of your kids fighting over which one would be the fairy or which one would be Spiderman. While your kids argue you go down memory lane and reminisce of the time you were a kid. There’s no quarrel over costumes because in the first place you have to make your own.

This, of course, lights up a series of light bulbs in your head. Why not have my kids make their own costumes. It’s economical, its fun to do, and you can show your kids the value of work. However, if you follow this path be prepared with some resistance especially if you have promised your kid a great costume last year or if you have spoiled them a little along the way.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Halloween. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

In the end, it is your decision to make. Plus, homemade Halloween costumes are not always the crappy things that children always thought they would be. With extra effort and a lot of imagination, you can make your kid a Halloween costume better than the ones they sell at the mall.

To encourage your kid avoid the usual white bed sheet with holes for the arms, eyes, and mouth costume.
This is not a great idea, unless your kid wants that. But as someone who has been around, try to be more creative and spend time on your kid’s costume.

Try to remember that nowadays, its okay to have costumes of celebrities and superheroes. In fact your kid might be badgering you of a batman costume. That one can be tricky but with the right materials you can make one from a black cloth, ski mask, kid’s tights, and that pair of boots your kid has in your room.

Other costume ideas include a cat or kitten costume which involves leggings, sweatshirts, stockings or rope for the tail, and probably a paper at mask. A devil costume is also quite easy to make. Clothe your kid in all red or black and buy that head band horns which you can practically see everywhere during this time of the year. You can add a cape if you want and of course a forked staff. Just make sure your kid knows that the staff is for props only and not for poking his neighbor.

Materials you will need for your budget Halloween costumes are readily available in most shops or most of them you can even find in your own home. Again, you can create a great costume while working on a budget, all you need is time to spend and imagination to burn.

As your knowledge about Halloween continues to grow, you will begin to see how Halloween fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.

Celebrating Halloween without Trick or Treating

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 9:57 am

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

Some parents are overly protective and they don’t want to let their kids go trick or treating. If you are one of those parents, you have to find some other ways to make them have fun and here are a few options.

The first is get in touch with your local community or recreation center to find out if they have any planned activities for Halloween. They may have a costume party or a night filled with games for everyone to enjoy.

For those who don’t want their kids to go trick or treating in the streets, their kids can still do this by going to the mall. This is because some shopping malls encourage their tenants to provide candies and other goodies for shoppers. There are also costume parades and contests which the kids will love to watch and maybe win a few prizes.

If you live in a small town, chances are there is an activity for the evening like perhaps a dance or a concert.

You can also go with your kids and visit a haunted house. This event is usually sponsored by the local community to raise funds and what they do is rent a house for the evening, decorate the place and scare people all in the spirit of fun.

For people who don’t want to go out and just stay at home, let the people come instead by hosting a Halloween party. You can plan it weeks in advance so you have time to buy the decorations, stock up on food and send out the invitations.

If you find yourself confused by what you’ve read to this point, don’t despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

You and yours kids can then spend quality time together by putting the décor up like hang fake spider webs through the entry way after cutting them out using black construction paper, put out tombstones made from Styrofoam that can be made or purchased from craft stores and of course pumpkins which you can carve out yourself.

As for sounds, you can download a few songs as we all sound effects into you MP3 player then just put speakers around the house. To create a foggy atmosphere when people approach your home, buy some dry ice.

The only way your guests will have a good time is to make sure there is a lot of food and drinks to go around. So they don’t bored, plan a few games and activities that everyone can participate in. One game you would love is apple bobbing where you put a bunch of apples in the bathtub or basin and then let the participants pick it up using their teeth.

As for dinner, serve spaghetti that look like eyeballs, tomato soup and a few other dishes that are ideal for the occasion.

Since there will be kids attending the party, make sure there are games for them as well. One game could be pin the skeleton which is very similar to pin the donkey. You can also bake caramel apples so the kids can just grab them when they want another one.

Because kids love candy, be sure that there are plenty of them around. Don’t forget to thank everyone for coming by preparing loot bags that they can bring home.

Pl anning

and hosting a Halloween party takes a lot of work but its all worth it if everyone was able to have a good time. The only thing to do now when the party is over is clean up and return things to the way they were.

There’s a lot to understand about Halloween. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

1. The first is the Bat Sandwich. You will need some sharp cheddar cheese, soft chive and onion flavored cream cheese, drained diced pimiento, chopped toasted pecans and bread slices. After you mix the ingredients mentioned, put the spread onto one side of the bread and then put another one on top. Cut this to shape like a bat and then serve.

2. Something light you can also serve is Goblin’s Taco Chicken salad. You will need skinless chicken breasts, tomato based salsa, salad greens, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, green olives and sour cream.

Cut the chicken breasts into small strips. When you are finished, cook this with salsa at medium high for ten minutes until the chicken is cooked. Mix this with greens and cheese in a large bowl then add any remaining salsa together with the dressing.

Cook the contents of the pumpkin pie and then let it cool. Then get the rest of the ingredients and mix this all together before putting this into the pie bowl as this will form the pie’s crust. When it’s finished, cool the pie in a rack and refrigerate.

6. One game that people get to play during Halloween is apple bobbing. Instead of playing with food, you can enjoy it by making Apples on Stick. Storytelling During Halloween

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 8:02 pm

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of Halloween is certainly no exception.

This might not be a great practice especially since children scare easily but still there are quite a number of relevant stories which you can tell during a storytelling session in a Halloween party or event. Even if it’s not Halloween, you will always have a request from your listeners to tell a scary story. So people have more excuse to demand a scary story during this day of the year when spirits and monsters are supposed to be free to roam the surface world.

Aside from scary stories, you can also narrate mystery type of stories. Having a storytelling session in your Halloween party program will keep the children quiet and at bay. This is also a good opportunity to prepare other things for the party.

What stories to tell? You can search the internet for various short scary stories that have both the Halloween scare factor and at the same time children will learn something productive and inspiring at the end of the story.

You can even draw from personal experiences or stories. It’s often ?cool? hearing a story from someone who has experienced it first had or was really there. This gives the story a personal touch and the kids just love the idea of stories happening for real.

Remember not to overdo it though. These are children we’re talking about and if you scare them witless, they will certainly have nightmares and you’ll have parents breathing down your neck the next day. Now that would be a real scary situation for you as organizer or storyteller.

If your Halloween facts are out-of-date, how will that affect your actions and decisions? Make certain you don’t let important Halloween information slip by you.

If you lack some modern shorts and have not time to prepare your own stories, you can always turn to the classics. There are several classic ghost stories that children nowadays have yet to hear.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of them. The headless horseman of Washington Irving is sure make some children gasp. You can tell the story of the Flying Dutchman, a mysterious ship that is said to be a doom ship that brings bad things to other ships that crosses their paths. Dr. Frankenstein’s monster is also always popular.

Another classic is A Ghost Story by Mark Twain which has several adaptations that you could read for the kid’s enjoyment. Algernon Blackwood’s The Willows is said to be the best ghost story in history. You might also find some suitable adaptation for children somewhere in your bookstore or on the internet. Another work of Blackwood is The Empty House which is also pretty good.

Now, I have to remind you at this point that you will be reading these stories to children. You might want to kind versions that would be easier for children to grasp and understand.

If you’re Halloween party is for adults, which I also think putting a storytelling session is a great idea, you can be as eloquent as you want. But in the meantime, simple and short adaptations would be better for children’s party.

If for some reason you can’t get any storytellers for your party, other options would be buying an audio or video CD of various ghost stories. There are several of these in the market and you can easily buy one off the rack of your favorite bookshop or audio store.

The idea here is to keep your options open. Of course Halloween parties involve game and prizes but having a Halloween storytelling session can be both fun and productive.

What is Halloween

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 11:50 pm

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31st. It is celebrated with Halloween parties and kids going house to house going trick or treating. It is celebrated in the US and in other parts of the world like the United Kingdom and Canada.

How Halloween is celebrated today goes back to the time when ancient pagans believed that October 31 is the day when the boundary between the living and the dead dissolves. Since the dead could cause harm to those who are living, people will go out into the streets wearing costumes and masks to ward off the evil spirits.

But that was then and now, we simply do it for fun. Weeks before Halloween, people would go out and by costumes. The most saleable ones are the skeletons, ghosts, vampires, witches and devils.

If you have the time, you can make your own costume based on a television show or movie.

One study shows that of the people surveyed, more than half of the American public plan to buy a costume for Halloween even if it costs $10 more than it did last year. This means that sales will reach more than $6 billion from a little over $5 billion last year.

People in the Halloween spirit will also put up decorations in their homes like carved pumpkins, skeletons and candles.

During parties, aside from the food and drinks, several games are played. The most common is dunking or bobbing for apples in which applies that are floating in a tub or large basin are picked up by the participants using their teeth.

You can see that there’s practical value in learning more about Halloween. Can you think of ways to apply what’s been covered so far?

Another is to eat syrup coated scones that is hanging by a string. Again, you have to eat it without using your hands.

If you don’t want to go to party and do something daring, try going with a few friends and visit a haunted house. Many people don’t do this literally when they can have fun visiting a theme park that has something special for the occasion.

The favorite fruit during Halloween is the apple because it comes during the wake of the harvest season. You can eat it directly or have this mixed with sticky syrup and nuts.

Other countries celebrate Halloween differently. In most Asian countries, the people put food and water as well as a lantern so those who have departed will have something to eat, drink and a lighted path as they travel the earth during Halloween night. In Czechoslovakia, chairs are placed by the fireside on Halloween night. Each chair represents a living member and those who have passed on. The Swedes simply give students a day-off and a shortened working day for the employees.

But paying homage to the dead is what most countries do during Halloween. In fact, the day after which is November 1, is considered to be All Saint’s Day while the 2nd is called All Soul’s Day. This is done to commemorate those who are in purgatory with the hope of being cleansed of their sins so they may go to heaven.

For most children and adults, Halloween is simply a time to have fun with friends and family. They can go around getting candy by moving from one house to the next while the grown ups will go to a party where there is a lot of food and drinks.

How to Make a Halloween Trick or Treat Bag

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 9:53 am

The more you understand ab out

any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of Halloween is certainly no exception.

If your kid’s costume is ready the only thing they need now is a trick or treat bag. While you can buy this from the store, you can save money and be creative at the same time if you are able to make this on your own.

The first thing you have to do is look for an old shopping bag. This should be able to carry a lot of candy and should not break because of the weight. Ideally, this should be color orange as this is often associated with Halloween.

Since your kid can’t go around with a gift bag featuring the logo of the department store, it is time to decorate the trick or treat bag. For that, look at some templates online and then print it out.

Now trace the picture onto tracing paper using a pencil and then cut it out. Tape the cutout onto a sheet of black construction paper and center this in the middle of the bag. Push the construction paper down so it will stick well on the trick or treat bag and all air bubbles have been removed.

There are some designs that you can get that will require more than just pressing it on the bag. You may have to iron it into the fabric similar to what is done to a shirt that has no distinctive markings. When you do it, make sure there is a cardboard placed in between the two sides so the colors do not bleed from one side to the other.

The information about Halloween presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Halloween or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

You can also create a trick or treat bag by drawing the design and then pasting it. Some examples which are popular include the ghost, skill or pumpkin. You then cut it and then repeat the same procedures as the one mentioned before.

To make the trick or treat bag more decorative, add some Halloween stickers or sprinkle some glitters after mixing this with some glue. You can also use this to write their name so no one will get it by mistake.

Another way to make a treat or trick bag is to buy some fabric from the store and then sew it together. Since there is sure to be leftover material, use this to create handles and then label it using some thread or with craft paint sticks.

Before you let your kid walk out the door with it, test it to make sure that it won’t suddenly burst open once it becomes too heavy. You can do this by putting candy and then leaving it for an hour or so since this is about the same time that your child will be out. If nothing happens, then it can withstand the weight even if your kid is walking with this from house to house.

You don’t have to pay much for a trick or treat bag when you can make it at home. One of the benefits of doing it is to reduce the chance that someone in the neighborhood will have something similar to what your kid has.

When Halloween is all over, you can keep it and then use this again for next Halloween. But if your child wants something different, that is perfectly because they will most likely wear a different costume next year and the trick or treat bag should always match the outfit.

There’s no doubt that the topic of Halloween can be fascinating. If you still have unanswered questions about Halloween, you may find what you’re looking for in the next article.

A Few Recipes You Can Serve During a Halloween Party

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 4:26 am

If you are throwing a Halloween party, one of the things you have to prepare is the food. Since people won’t be sitting but rather taking a few dips of what is available, here are some great treats you should have.

1. First is the Brown Spider.

For this, you will need a few Ritz crackers, pretzel sticks, a pack of Hershey kisses, a tube or red and white cake frosting. Now take one cracker and spread it with some peanut butter. Then you put 4 pretzels and place this on each side to act as the spider’s legs. Put another cracker on top to cover it up then spray it with cake frosting.

2. For the vegetarians out there, you can serve them Fungi Salad. For this, you will need spinach cream, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes and red onions. Put the spinach in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to cool while you wash the other vegetables in cold water. Dry the lettuce using a paper towel and then cut the other vegetables into small pieces. Put this into bowl and then pour in cooled spinach cream.

3. Next is the Meatloaf Mice. For this, you will need some catsup, ground beef, turkey, onions, carrots, uncooked spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, raisins, oatmeal, salt and paper.

When you have all these ingredients, start by cutting the carrot horizontally to make some mouse ears and vertically to make the mouse tail then steam until it becomes crisp tender.

The best time to learn about Halloween is before you’re in the thick of things. Wise readers will keep reading to earn some valuable Halloween experience while it’s still free.

Put the meat loaf on a baking sheet after you mix the rest of the ingredients and shaping it into a mice shaped loaf before throwing this into the oven. Bake for 45 minutes and when it is finished, cut little slits so you can put in the carrot ears and tail. Break the uncooked spaghetti noodles into small pieces so this will be the nose of the mouse. Pour the cooked spaghetti sauce and serve.

4. If you carved a pumpkin, then this recipe will make the most of the contents you removed since you are going to use it to make a pumpkin cake. Aside from the pumpkin, you will need some eggs, sugar, oil, all purpose flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nut or raisins.

Put the eggs and sugar into the food processor until it is smooth. Add the other ingredients and stir until it is cooked. When it’s done, turn the batter into two round cake molds that are greased and lightly floured. Put this in the oven at 350F for about 40 minutes. Unmold these and then stack it together. Put orange tinted frosting on top and then put it on the dinner table.

5. As for refreshments, you can serve sewage slurpers. You will need chocolate chip ice cream, chocolate syrup and club soda.

When the ice cream is easy to scoop, put this into glasses at least halfway. Now, pour in 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup. Last, fill it to the top with club soda and stir well with a spoon. You can top it off with an unwrapped tootsie roll and a straw.

There are other Halloween dishes which you can serve in the party. Although the names sound gross, don’t be fooled by it because you are sure to have a hearty meal once you put it in your mouth.

That’s the latest from the Halloween authorities. Once you’re familiar with these ideas, you’ll be ready to move to the next level.

Ten Safety Tips That Adults Must Practice During Halloween

Category: HalloweenAnders Eriksson @ 6:25 pm

This article explains a few things about Halloween, and if you’re interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don’t know.

There will be a lot of kids walking around the neighborhood during Halloween. Apart from the planning for the event, children will be knocking on your door and asking for goodies so be ready for them by exercising these safety tips.

1. If you are going to be at home the whole night, keep your porch lights and any other exterior lights on so they know that they come and knock at your door.

2. If you live in a street where a lot of cars pass regularly, go out so you can tell the drivers not to speed and you can check that there are no acts of malicious mischief or crimes happening against children. Should you see someone out of place, report this directly to the police by dialing 911.

3. For those who have candlelit jack o lanterns on their front porch, make sure that this is placed a bit far from doorsteps or landings. Children could play with it or at worse, their costume could catch fire and you will have a bigger problem on your hands. One alternative is to use lighted bulbs instead.

4. When you are carving a pumpkin or working on a lantern, don’t let the kids touch any of the sharp tools.

5. Your children will choose what they want to wear during Halloween night.

Just makes sure that the outfit they choose to wear is flame resistant and is not too long as this could make them trip or fall.

I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

6. Should you own a pet, make sure it is leashed or in a caged as kids who don’t know any better could be discouraged from knocking.

7. When children knock at the door, give candy to each of them. If they push and shove, tell them to line up as there is plenty for everyone. Never invite them into your home so you won’t be accused later on of anything. When everyone’s trick or treat bag has been filled, tell them the safest route to take so they can be on their way. Also, remind them to have their goodies checked first by their parents before eating it.

8. Since everyone is going to give candy, you can do something different by providing them healthier treats. Examples of these include a pack or raisins, pretzels or biscuits since this will not damage to their teeth compared to candy. These are also easy to swallow since some candies may choke the child.

9. Most kids will only go trick or treating in the late afternoon or early evening. So you don’t get a knock at 9pm or 10pm, put up a sign that says you will only be giving out candies until a certain time.

10. If your kids are going trick or treating, remind them of a few things like going around the neighborhood with a group, don’t take candies from strangers, only visit homes of people they know, look both ways before crossing the street, come home at a specified time and have the candies checked before eating them.

Nobody wants anything bad to happen during Halloween. By practicing these safety tips, you are sure that kids who will be knocking on your door as well as your own will have a fun filled evening so everyone will sleep soundly that night.
