Finding Your Niche in Magazine Publishing

Category: Magazine PublishingAnders Eriksson @ 3:41 pm

Magazine publishing is a multi-billion dollar industry. What other industry could you find that caters to every niche of market there is? It is no wonder that careers in magazine publishing would be as prolific as the type of magazine there is. Here?s an overview of the different type of professions for anyone who considers making a career in this industry.

Editorial/Writing

For anyone who has flair for writing, a career in magazine publishing is an easy one. A good start is to work as an intern in a magazine publishing company. Though this is the least fabulous of all the positions, it will provide you training and connections in the industry. It would also be helpful if you would have a folio that it always on hand. One may also start in an entry-level position as an editorial assistant. Aside from writing, rewriting and copyediting, certain office duties may also be asked. You could then work your way up to being an associate editor, managing editor, executive editor and finally, an editor-in-chief!

Marketing

If you are meticulous, could communicate well and could convince people into an idea or a brand in ways other than writing, then you could have a spot in marketing. Through marketing, you make sure that you make your market hear what the magazine wants them to hear. You must then know how to harmonize the behavior and trends of your market with your publications. This may involve overseeing the sales, the distribution of the publication as well as what kind of articles goes into the magazine.

Production

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there’s more to Magazine Publishing than you may have first thought.

This is the actual production of the magazine. You must be very keen with the details, the deadline and the technology that goes with it. Production is used to be associated with machineries and heavy equipment. However now, production goes beyond the tangible paper and ink. Online publishing have changed the way magazines are produced. Production now also involves a great deal of information technology skills.

Design

Other than writing, you could also channel your creativity by being involved with the design of the magazine. Magazines rely heavily on the aesthetics, not only for sales, but also as an alternative way for expression. The design of the magazine also helps it to turn into a brand. Magazines like Time have a signature red border on its cover while the National Geographic has a yellow border.

Sales

Just like any business, magazine publishing also has a concern with sales. However, there is more to it than simply being able to sell. You need to be charismatic, diplomatic and to have integrity. Building good relationships with your clients is important. Aside from people skills, you also need to develop your analytical skills in studying market reports and sales. You have to know how will your ads will be effective to your magazine and its market.

There are many career paths to choose from in the magazine publishing industry. You may have a proven ability for writing or graphic design but a university degree would be, if not mandatory, extremely helpful. Keep in mind that magazine publishing also involves corporate work and that companies do want to present a professional image to the market.

Just make sure that the degree that you?ll be having or is already pursuing is relevant to the industry. If you are still undecided of which field to choose, it is highly recommended that you take an internship in a magazine publishing company. You may not start out glamorous (think Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada) but you?ll definitely learn a lot. In time, you?ll learn the tricks of the trade and you?ll be on your way to the top.

If you’ve picked some pointers about Magazine Publishing that you can put into action, then by all means, do so. You won’t really be able to gain any benefits from your new knowledge if you don’t use it.

The Science of the Magazine Publishing Process

Category: Magazine PublishingAnders Eriksson @ 10:19 pm

In science, there always has to be a process. Science occurs in the sequence of questioning, researching, experimenting, documenting, and concluding. Like in any scientific process that uses the scientific method, magazine publishing also has its own simplified version — production and distribution. I wouldn’t call it a vicious cycle because of the way the magazine’s content reinvents itself, but it is still a cycle in itself. This is proven by the continuous racks of magazine stands that fill up every week and every month.

Production: The Perfect Bind

The models, editors and photographers have done their job. Now the pages are laid out and completed. Without the right finish to the product, they will be nothing but tattered pages of words and pictures. It is time to turn these pages into a magazine.

The different sections of the magazine are printed out separately. Some are in black and white, others in full color. It all depends on the editor’s preference.

After this, there are two ways by which a magazine’s sections can be bound together. It could be done through saddle-stitching or perfect binding. Saddle-stitching does not use thread or any weak material. It is done by stapling the center fold within the magazine’s cover page. This is often used for magazines that don’t have a lot of pages and don’t need heavy duty material to bind the pages together. If staple wire is too weak to put the sections together, then a spine is made by gluing one end of the pages together. This is called perfect binding and is used for thick magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

See how much you can learn about Magazine Publishing when you take a little time to read a well-researched article? Don’t miss out on the rest of this great information.

Distribution: Tapping into Globalization and the World Wide Web

As times have changed, the magazine industry has naturally evolved to adopt the paper-free system. Indeed, magazine publishing has already infiltrated cyberspace and beyond. There are no pages to print and no papers to bind. These are called online magazines and are usually either copies of the paper-based ones or are independent magazines themselves. All they need are their publishing schedules, pictures and articles, and they’re good to go once they have a solid reader base. The profit they generate will most probably be from pay-per-read articles or from the profit generated from high traffic to the website.

When before, magazines were only distributed in the country of its origin, now it is being distributed worldwide and franchised by different countries. Today, magazine publishing has overdone itself in that it has allowed its publications to sprout up in countries such as China and Australia, allowing them to work under the name of the magazine but produce their own content.

Of course, the content must still be parallel with the topics that the main franchise of the magazine is known for. The irony here is that the different countries can localize their content but are participating in a worldwide company, allowing diversity in the process of globalization.

As you can see, the magazine publishing industry is in its booming stage, and many people are cashing in on the potential of the magazine business to grow. As it involves a complicated process in production and distribution, it allows creative minds to venture in and participate. It takes brains and willpower to get an edge in the magazine industry.

Those who only know one or two facts about Magazine Publishing can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you’re learning here.

What is Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

Category: AutismAnders Eriksson @ 3:19 pm

Would you like to find out what those-in-the-know have to say about Autism? The information in the article below comes straight from well-informed experts with special knowledge about Autism.

Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified is also known as PDD-NOS. This is where a child only shows some of the signs of Autism. They may not show these signs at all times, or in all places. Usually PDD-NOS is first seen in children three or four years of age. Yet some children show signs while still an infant. There are different areas that the signs could be present. We will look at two of these.

Social Interaction

The developmental delays in social interaction can often be seen when the child is a baby. They may not look you in the eyes, or smile when you are interacting with them. They do not hold their arms up for you to pick them up. They might play off by their self. Some of the children with PDD-NOS may enjoy being cuddled on occasion. They might enjoy rough housing with their older sibling or parent.

These PDD-NOS children usually do not have problems with separation from their parents. They also do not have issues with strangers. They may run right up to a stranger like they would their parents. When the child is older they will usually become close to their parents or other adults. They have a hard time making friends. They do not like participating in games with other kids. Some children with mild PDD-NOS will want to make friends, but since they have a hard time dealing with other people socially this will be hard for them.

You can see that there’s practical value in learning more about Autism. Can you think of ways to apply what’s been covered so far?

Communication Impairments

The impairments of communication in children with Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Other Specified can start while in infancy. The child will not babble or try to talk like other children do. They may pick up a word and repeat it over and over again.

Some PDD-NOS children pick up speech easy, but they have problems using the right words in the right situation. They have trouble understanding the tone in someone’s voice when they are joking or using sarcasm. If someone tells them something they take it literally. For example if the child was told it is raining cats and dogs they would most likely go look out the window and expect to see cats and dogs falling from the sky. Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified children may only talk about subjects they are interested in. It may seem that they are talking at you instead of with you.

Children with Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified have a hard time with emotions. They usually experience emotions, but to the extreme. If they are mad they have temper tantrums that last much loner than a normal child. This is the same for fears, or sadness. They may have extremely happy times. They usually will not show facial expressions that go along with the emotion.

These are just two of the many signs of a child with Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. If you see these signs in your child speak to their doctor about your concerns. They can examine the child to see if further testing in necessary.

Scrapbooking

Category: ScrapbookingAnders Eriksson @ 4:50 am

When you think about Scrapbooking, what do you think of first? Which aspects of Scrapbooking are important, which are essential, and which ones can you take or leave? You be the judge.

Scrapbooking has become quite a sensation, not only in America but all across the world. This is brought partly by the prevalence of craft shows on TV and with cable channels, other parts of the globe especially the Asian regions have begun to acquire the habit too. Magazines on the subject have also begun to crop up, teaching various techniques and reaching a wider scope of readers.

One of the most important things that these shows and magazines have done is to make scrapbooking seem easy for ordinary people. Now, even if one has no artistic talent or any creative skill, one will still attempt to do scrapbooking because it all seems so easy to do.
Tools and accessories that are being sold in the market have also made scrapbooking easy and accessible to people. There is no need to cut and paste like what people do in the past. Now, tools and gadgets provide a short cut to every long process of designing and layouting. There are even computer programs devoted to the subject.

Craft stores have begun to offer various tools and accessories for scrapbooking. Every season, there seems to be a new tool or gadget that will make a scrapbooker?s life relatively easy. There are now engraving tools as well as embossing mediums. There are special glues that can help stick anything to any surface. There are specialized stickers that can be used in albums and scrapbook pages. Everything is already available for the scrapbooker.

With all these tools and accessories, it is no wonder that scrapbooking is an expensive hobby. Compared to other hobbies like sports, purchasing materials is a continuous process. In every scrapbook that you will be buying, you have to buy supplies and tools. Still, whether or not you will be shelling out much money will really depend on the person. Scrapbooking need not be an expensive activity if you know what to do and how to do it.

Below are just some ideas on how to achieve a page that is both beautiful to the eyes and to the pockets!

Cut from magazines and newspapers

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about Scrapbooking. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

After reading the newspaper or a magazine, don?t just throw it just yet. These reading materials contain great graphics that you can use for your page. The ads for instance in newspapers can be cut and pasted for the pages. The same goes with the pictures that are used for articles in magazines.

Buy your own magazines

If you don?t have stock newspapers and magazines in your house, you can actually buy a magazine and then cut graphics from there. This is more inexpensive than buying stickers or graphics in craft stores. As much as possible, buy the magazine that will contain the images that you are searching for. For instance, if you are putting together a scrapbook for a wedding, your best bet is to buy a magazine on weddings. The same goes with a baby shower or with a kiddie magazine.

Wrappers, greeting cards and stationeries

Newspapers and magazines are not the only items where you can get great graphics. Stationeries, letter envelopes and old greeting cards are also great sources of pictures that you can use for your scrapbook pages. Another source are wrappers. Make sure though that the wrapper that you will be buying have lots of different pictures on it. What is unfortunate about wrappers is the fact that the design is recurrent.

There’s a lot to understand about Scrapbooking. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

How to Choose a Used Drum Set: Play Drums like A Pro

Category: Play DrumsAnders Eriksson @ 7:35 pm

Now that you have finally chosen to learn how to play the drums and become the next Ringo Starr or Alex Van Halen, you need to remember that before you can start jamming with your friends in your garage and producing your first single, you need to have a drum set first.

Besides, banging an empty garbage can with the lid as the cymbal, and using your mom?s wooden spoon as drum sticks will not really sound great on tape, not to mention that the ears of the people within hearing range will be complaining.

However, what if you really don?t have the money to purchase a new drum set? You have to consider the fact that brand new drum sets can really be expensive. And, in some cases, the cymbals that are included are not really that great in terms of quality.

If you really want to buy your own drum set but you still don?t have the money for a brand new one, you might want to consider buying a used drum set. You?d be surprised as to how many people are willing to give up a perfectly good drum set for a very low price.

In most cases, these people are parents whose kids have gone to college or moved out who are looking to turn the basement in to a home entertainment room.

In some cases, the sellers may be musicians who are looking to upgrade their drum set. Either way, you will see that they will be able to offer you great prices for their drum set.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

However, it is still important to be cautious. Even if the drum set looks good, you still need to make sure that the drum set you plan on buying is of good quality and is in perfect working condition, which includes the hardware, such as the cymbal stands and the drum seat as well as the pedals.

It is important to make sure that you play it before you purchase it. A lot of cheap drum sets may look really good but after trying them out, it won?t really sound as good as it looks.

You will also want to inspect the drum set with a friend who has experience with drums. By doing so, you will be able to use their expertise in order to make sure that the drum set you plan on buying is in good condition and that all the hardware pieces are still there.

If this is your first time to purchase a drum set, remember to keep it simple. A large drum set may be tempting for you to buy but you need to remember that as a beginner, you won?t need a lot of drums and cymbals. Go for the cheaper and more basic set up. Once you gain more experience and you know what you want in your music, you can start adding more accessories to the set.

When buying drum sets, always remember that brands are everything. Always go for well known brands, such as Pearl and Ludwig.

These are the things that you should look for in a used drum set. By keeping these things in mind, you can be sure that you will be able to get the perfect drum set for you to jam with your friends.

That’s the latest from the Play Drums authorities. Once you’re familiar with these ideas, you’ll be ready to move to the next level.

Create Memories that Last

Category: ScrapbookingAnders Eriksson @ 6:31 pm

Photographs and preserving them in a photo album is a novel way of keeping memories fresh in one’s mind. Every time one gets to view a photo album, reminiscences and the feelings associated with the memories brought by the snapshots come up and are brought back to life. Pictures as they say, speak a thousand words. Go a step further and paint a complete story by enhancing photos albums into scrapbooks.

Scrapbooking is the means of showcasing a memory by incorporating other creative objects along with photographs to be able to give depth and texture to a memory. It is akin to translating a story into a tactile and visual treat for you and for anyone who happens to view your scrapbook. This way, scrapbooking becomes a creative means for you to remember beautiful memories, as well as share past moments with friends and loved ones.

For instance, instead of just putting a memorable photo of your trip to the park inside a regular photo album, enhance your presentation by including different media to compliment and enhance your photograph. Perhaps you can add items like an actual leaf that has fallen from that park and preserve in along with your photo. Don’t limit yourself to this however. You can add any pertinent items that will make your showcase even more colorful and lively. This way, your memory almost pops up out of your scrapbook with a vibrancy and life that does your remembrance justice.

The term scrapbooking stems from the principle that in making your scrapbook, you incorporate creative bits and pieces or “scraps” along with your photographs to create a wonderful storytelling medium that can be personally enjoyed as well as shared. Because of the popularity of scrapbooking, there are now many commercially available materials that you can use for this endeavor.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

Naturally, it would probably be ideal to be able to use materials that actually constitute your memory and photograph. However, sometimes, if the photograph is really old and you can no longer salvage old scraps from that era, you can turn to modern day materials to get the job done.

There are a lot of variety of trinkets and items available in the market, which you can use in your scrapbook layout. Virtually anything you will need for this effort can be purchased from scrapbooking sources.

Of course the most common scrapbooking materials you will need is the scrapbook itself and some items like scrapbooking stickers that do wonders for any scrapbook layout. Using scrapbooking stickers instead of cutting out pieces of paper and gluing them to your layout saves time without sacrificing quality and creativity. Be sure however, that just like the paper you use for your scrapbook, your scrapbooking sticker is acid-free and has the qualities needed for preserving your memories. Remember that acid in paper is harmful to your photographs.

Instead of protecting your memories, acid will slowly corrode and compromise your photos. To ensure that your memories last, use only quality materials like scrapbooking stickers that do not harm or compromise your photographs. It is important to check on not only the paper used for scrapbooking stickers, but also on the type of adhesive used on these. This way, you can be assured of immortalizing your memories through your scrapbook.

When Less is More in Scrapbooking

Category: ScrapbookingAnders Eriksson @ 8:07 pm

Scrapbooking is a wonderful and creative means to be able to preserve memories and share them with other people. To make a scrapbook, one should be able to create a visual and tactile delight by showcasing photographs along with other “scraps” or bits and pieces of something that when put together tells a complete story of that particular slice of life depicted in the particular photo.

For instance, a photograph of a person hardly tells a story especially if the photo has no other particular merits or characteristics other than it containing a face. Creatively making a layout of it in a scrapbook allows you to tell the story behind the photograph. By adding other elements from different mediums, you can explain the photograph and the memory behind it without using something as blatant as actual statements.

The challenge of scrapbooking is in being able to utilize various elements to enhance a photograph while being limited to a finite area. Sometimes, in our zeal to tell a story, we tend to clutter and create a busy layout for our scrapbook. While there is no right or wrong way to layout a scrapbook, it may be important to note that sometimes, less is more.

Perhaps it is important to remember that when we do scrapbooking, the inclusion of “scraps” or other creative elements into a layout is done to enhance a photo and tell a story that the photograph simply cannot do on its own. Our layout of the elements we incorporate however should not take away from the photograph. Remember that they are there only to improve its capacity to convey a thought or memory and not steal the show entirely.

The information about Scrapbooking presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Scrapbooking or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

This means that although there are no set rules in scrapbooking, it may be a good guideline to maintain a clean and simple layout for scrapbook projects. Although it is easy to get lost in the project and with all the items and “scraps” commercially available for use in scrapbooking endeavors, we must always keep in mind that a clean and simple layout may be more manageable to create and maintain.

By a clean and simple scrapbooking layout, we don’t mean that you necessarily use less materials resulting in a Spartan like or anemic look to your scrapbook pages. A clean and simple scrapbooking layout simply means that you incorporate more synergy and symmetry in your layout instead of a haphazard collection of images, textures and colors.

The look and feel of a scrapbook is subjective to the viewer, which makes it even more important to maintain a clean and simple layout in scrapbooking. What looks like creativity to you may look too chaotic to another. This is why, being guided by trying to achieve a clean and simple scrapbooking layout is a good way to ensure that your scrapbook and memories can be easily shared and enjoyed by yourself along with your friends and loved ones. A clean and simple layout for scrapbooking cannot be achieved by curtailing creativity. Instead, more creativity should be exercised so that you can craft a better visual layout.

If however you are new to scrapbooking or you may not be sure about what clean and simple scrapbooking layouts mean, you can use ready made scrapbook layouts or use a software for scrapbooks. You don’t necessarily have to convert your scrapbooks into digital forms but you are sure to be able to get wonderful ideas from these computer layouts.
